Medical Imaging Solution Company SKIA Successfully Performs Over 40 Brain Surgeries Using Augmented Reality (AR) at an Indian Hospital
Jongmyung Lee, CEO of SKIA, announced on the 28th that “the number of surgeries performed using SKIA products at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad, India has surpassed 40, with all patients successfully completing surgery.”
To expand into the Indian market, SKIA established SKIA-India LLP in collaboration with local experts. The company is currently conducting a pilot program applying its outpatient education solution at a large local hospital in Hyderabad.
SKIA has developed the world’s first medical surgical platform that visualizes internal anatomy in augmented reality without placing markers on the body—only scanning the skin. The platform meets FDA surgical navigation accuracy standards without causing harm to patients. This is particularly notable because brain surgeries require significantly higher precision than other types of surgery.
While many surgical navigation systems exist for brain operations, SKIA’s solution stands out by reconstructing patient medical images into 3D and projecting them directly onto the patient. Traditional systems that rely on MRI and CT images for neurosurgical navigation often result in longer surgery times and increased anesthesia dosage. In contrast, SKIA allows intuitive visualization of internal structures simply by scanning the patient's skin, without any invasive procedures.
The head of neurosurgery at KIMS Hospital stated, “The SKIA solution is extremely useful in surgeries as it provides a 3D view inside the brain,” adding, “It enables every surgeon to perform at a high level, as if they are equipped with over 20 years of surgical experience in a capsule.”
Meanwhile, SKIA’s solution SKIA Face received domestic medical device certification in May this year, making it likely that AR surgical navigation for the entire head and neck region will soon be available in Korea. SKIA’s breast cancer solution SKIA Breast is also scheduled to undergo pivotal clinical trials in the second half of this year.
